Need expert opinions. I bought a 1974 Super Beetle in August and about three weeks ago it threw a rod. A replacement engine will cost more than I paid for the car ($1500). My question is if you more experienced vw afficionados(sp) think it is worth replacing the engine or not. If so, do you have any suggestions on an engine and where to get one. Any help would be appreciated.

Definitely not worth replacing unless the car has some special meanin to you. It is a 74'...it is a noted car but unless you care to much about the car scrap it. Otherwise, in my opinion, go to a wreckers (junkyard) and find an engine :-) Maybe the other guys will better suggestions :-)

i agree with JSD...if you really want this car, then yes, fix it up. but if you dont want to put 1500 into it..then dont.

how is the body of the car? and the under carriage?

Thanks for the input, guys. Right or wrong I'm probably going to buy a rebuilt engine and keep the car for the long haul. I've had an ATK engine recommended by an auto supply dealer. Anybody know anything good or bad about ATK?

The car is in pretty good shape. No real rust to speak of and the floor pans look fine. Needs a little work (i.e. paint and interior appearence stuff) but otherwise good.
