Hi,

I have a problem with my T4 2.5TDI. My vehicle in general operates as normal but when driving along a motorway after some time the power reduces and I can no longer maintain speed up hills. This is either a turbo or power system control problem. I can re-establish full engine power if I cut the ignition momentarily while rolling.

I have taken my T4 three times to my local VW garage but they cannot identify the problem. The last time they suggested that the only solution would be to replace the turbo -an expensive solution. However I'm not convinced it is solely a turbo problem as if turning on and off the ignition resolves the problem, temporarily, then surely it is electrical related.

Any ideas? Any one who has come across the same problem?

I have the same problem with my 01, 1.9 TDI Jetta.  I have replaced 2 mass air flow sensors only to have the no power problem to return.  One dealership mechanic said around 160,000 miles the waste gate arm can stick.  At a Volkswagen parts place they want you to buy the whole turbo.  But I have found a website that makes the arm to specifications and it only cost $195.00, www.piersdiesel.com.  I have not purchased it yet because I am not convinced if that is the problem.  Why can't any mechanics agree on the problems with the turbo diesels?  Let me know if this helped or if you have found out what to do.  Good luck.

Thanks for your help. My T4 has only 90000km on the clock so do you think this could still be a 'waste gate arm' problem or moreso and airflow sensor problem?

Mass air flow sensor is cheaper to replace if you get a reconditioned one.  I would try that first.
