I have a 2000 VW Cabrio stick shift with 44,000 miles. The car recently started bucking violently when my foot was on the accelerator and making a loud whirring noise. When I attempted to shift the car into third gear and give it more gas to see if the bucking would stop, the car came to a screeching halt with my foot ON THE GAS. A large clanking noise followed, like the bottom of the car fell off. So I pulled the car over and had it towed to my very trustworthy mechanic who later called me to say that he couldn't believe it but the transmission was shot. The 5 year 50,000 mi warranty is up, but I'm investigating to see if it is covered by some kind of power train warranty. I've called around to some VW service departments to ask about how unusual this is and I've been told "It happens" and, "The transmission can go at any time depending on how you drive it." I've been driving stick for 15yrs and nothing like this has ever happened to one of my cars no matter what the mileage. Can anyone advise on what to do about this? Has anyone heard of such a thing? -CabrioCrap

I have a 2001 cabrio with about 70,000 and I was just told my transmission has bit the dust! I was in a fender bender and it started happening right after the accident and so I wasn't sure if that was the cause. It seems like the transmission on these cars just aren't good. What gives?
