I just bought a 00 Jetta GLS w/2.0L auto transmission. It has 108,000 miles and is clean. My question is when should the timing belt be changed and how do you check the transmission fluid level. Any help appreciated.

you need to do the t-belt stat, vw say 115,000 but you should have it done about 70,000. Im not sure where you check the tranny fluid level on 2.0. check your owners manual, it should say, or do a quick search on vwvortex

Hello, I was reading your response regarding the timing belt. My 00 VR6 is hitting 75,000 miles and the local dealership said no to bother with the timing chain until 100,000 miles. So I am wondering why your suggestion is 70k? I don't want to break anything or ruin my extended warranty, so any insight would be wonderful.

on a vr6, you dont have to worry quite as much, your car is run by a chain, and being metal, its not gonna snap as fast as a rubber belt on a 2.0 or a 1.8t would. For a timing chain, 100,000 sounds acceptable. The dealership is always way off on their estimates. So i would look at doing it at about 90 or 80K. but thats just me. I wouldnt worry about your extended warranty, if you havent done anything to void it, its not your fault that the chain broke, so they have to cover you.

70K is the recommendation for any car that has a timing belt, just fyi. Ask any reputable mechanic, 70,000 is good average time to do the t-belt. Between then and at the latest 90. i know people that go way longer, but i mean, why risk it?

Remember when you replace your timing belt to also change your water pump. The water pump is run off of the timing belt and requires the same amount of work to get to. The stock water pump impellor is not as good as the aftermarket ones.

Well worth the extra $$ to add the water pump into the mix.

I changed the timing belt on my wifes 2000 2.0L at 90k and it was in great shape. I still didn't feel comfortable pushing it past that.

You can check to see what shape it's in by removing the upper plastic piece that covers the Cam Pulley.

good info!^^^ the oem water pump is crap, and if you go to somewhere like ecstuning.com or something, they have perfect kits set up with everything you need for a good t-belt job. metal impeller water pump and everything
