VW Mileage?

dahlstrom -> VW Mileage? (7/23/2007 11:52:44 AM)

Alright, so I'm looking for a used manual car to toy with[8|]  And I have a preference for Germans.  Anyways, I have seen a couple VWs (years ~2000-2005), and I was wondering how long these cars run.  I have a BMW and I know that these cars will keep up for hundreds of thousands of miles.  Are VWs the same, if not, how much is too much?  Is 80,000-120,000 miles still good for these cars?

Thanks, any and all help is appreciated.

Hey dahlstrom,

You are probably going to find some pretty pro-vw opinions on this forum, but for what it's worth, I think a jetta is a great choice for durability. My '99 GLS had over 275,000 miles when I wrecked it - I think it would still be running now. My current '01 TDI (turbo-deisel) has over 136,000 and still running strong - over 45 m.p.g highway.

From what I've seen, the higher performance models have more expensive repairs (turbos, etc.). On the contrary, my simple four-cylinder gasoline GLS required oil changes, one brake job, replaced timing belt and not much else!

Good Luck,
