my son took out everything in the 1972 super beetle (original block) engine and then went to the navy. I been using the pictures from the orange manuel & idiot book, but still cant figure out gas lines.I have the metal gas tank line hooked to the top port of the fuel pump right now. Where do the other lines go? Open Ports left: bottom port of fuel pump, that is a port on carb throat (under carb) on drivers side. The very top port of carb under air filter is the hookup from the pump w/ the fuel filter in between (is that right). When I get gas figured out, I have a question about the vacuum lines.

You should have a fuel line from the gas tank to the fuel pump, The fuel pump can have the suction on top or bottom, depends on when the pump was made. You can put some gas in a glass jar, put a short hose on one of the pump lines, the other end into the gas, and spin the engine over by hand and see if the pump is sucking fuel from the jar of blowing bubbles. Blowing bubbles is the out let, that goes to the carb. the line from the tank goes to the suction side. After determining that, the line from the pump to the carb may have a filter or not. they were and add on. just stick the line in place and clamp gently, 1. from tank to pump. 2.from pump to carb.
