So you know how VW engines are really silent, especially in low gear? Well in the last month my beetle has gone from a nice purring sound to more of a burring sound. It hasn't affected driving as far as I can tell (although it might have slightly less acceleration) but it definitely feels like the engine is running louder and less smoothly. And today, when I tried starting, it sputtered and smoke poured out from under the hood. After it had cleared, I tried again and it ran fine for the rest of the day. This may be unrelated, but that seems unlikely. Anyone had a similar experience or have any clue as to what may be causing this? Should I bring it to the dealer? -Nick

hmmm, good question, you could have a vaccum leak... check all your fluids, routine matintenance, make sure everything seems good, like the oil and trans fluid are good colors and what not, it's hard to diagnose from over here...do some more poking around and see what you can find..
