Hello,

I am looking at buying a 2000 Golf GLS (115 hp) at a local dealership. The car seems to be in amazing condition -- though it does have 108,000 miles on it. How long do these cars usually run? Are repairs costly? or frequent? Any other advice about whether or not to buy this car would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Casey

repairs always are and always will be costly, i have 1 1998 golf and it has 220 000km on it and it just not needs a new tranny but over its life it hasnt had any problems that were of high high cost
before this one my parents had two other volkswages that lasted well over 10 years each
i wirk in a shop and i see volkswagens with 400 000km come in every now and then
they are much more reliable than japanese or american cars in my opinion

ya i agree, i''m 21 and i have a 2000 golf with 240,000 and it still runs like a charm! the only thing i''d advise against the car would be the driver door lock, if the sensor goes, then your lookin at a 300 dollar bill. but never had a problem with the engine and i put 110,000 of the kilometers. i''ve driven one with 520,000 and as long as you maintain the fluids there won''t be any major problems!

Well I picked up a 1999 at the end of June.  It now has 159000 miles and if you put a piece of tape over the odometer you would think you where in a new car.  The dealership did and has all the maintenance records and aside from scheduled maintenance and wear items it had an AC system replaced at 120k and a water pump failure at 60k.  It is now showing signs of needing a clutch.  I think this is fantastic reliability and truly expect this Golf to go another 150k.
