I'm in the process of selling my '00 Nissan Frontier to buy either a Golf or a GTI (1997-2000). I'm fairly certain that if I go with a GTI, I'll get the 4cyl model (1.8L), because every VR6 I've seen within 500 miles of my house either has more than 140,000 miles on it, costs too much for me to afford, or has something wrong with it that I don't have the time or money to fix.

So, with that said, what is the difference between the Golf and the 4cyl GTI? They have the same size engine, same torque, but the Golf actually weighs a little less (to my surprise). Golfs are also a little easier to find. I'm a young adult male with a short attention span, so I'll probably end up modifying it performance-wise sometime down the road. Golfs tend to cost less than GTI's, but when I sell my truck, I'll have enough money for either one, so it doesn't really matter. What exactly would I be paying the extra grand for if I went with a GTI? Anyone?

well if your getting the golf, with the 1.8t then there is no difference really except it has four doors and there is some upgraded suspension on the gti. and thats about it. just dont do a 2.0L if you're looking for some serious modifications.

Thanks for your words. So on the Golf, even though it's a four-door, does the back seat fold down like in a GTI (probably a stupid question)?  and just out of curiosity, why do you suggest against getting a 2.0L?
