I have been trying for the last two months with the help of my Local Volkswagen Garage to fix a problem of the water overheating. So far I have had all pipes replaced Radiator Checked and repaired Leaks nor Thermostat and Thermostat Switch, The Fan Does Kick in and regularly. But when I drive the Vehicle over 23 miles The temperature Rises to the Point that the Water boils, I have had a Override switch put into so if I need I can activate the Fan on Speed Two, but this does not seem to work ( once out of 4 times it may have some effect ) However when I switch on the Heaters the Engine temp Behaves Perfectly, but this is impractical long term solution. Can Anyone help with advice on what I could Look at to solve this, I don’t want to get rid of My Transport as it’s a Great Vehicle for me and its just plain fun when it works.

Just signed up and I'm not really familiar with v-dubs yet but maybe there's an air lock in the cooling system. The air will sit in a high spot in the system and doesn't allow the system to work properly. shorty

VW are very sealed units, but if thats your problem, run the car with the rad cap off, let it idle till the coolant level drops and you should have all the air out of the coolant system

I also have a t3 and I have a lot of problems with over-heating, sometimes it heats and the water boils like you said, but recently the oil temp. light comes on but the oil temperature needle doesnt seem to go up. When I stop to have a look, afterwards it all seems fine and the light sometimes turns off and sometimes dosent. Its all very confusing, again the fan works well and when it should, and there are no leaks. By the way, whats the rad cap (just in case its that), is it the water filler cap?? cheers dave

It has been a while since i worked on these but we used to have to run the car with the rad-cap off for a while rev'ing the engine so that it heats up enough to work out the airlocks. Very common on these as they are a sealed system.
